Recently, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission released the Notice on Announcing the List of the First Batch of Shanghai Higher Education Excellence Teaching Materials (Shanghai Education Commission [2021] No. 32), recognizing 125 teaching materials (higher education category) as the first batch of Shanghai Higher Education Excellence Teaching Materials. The result of Shanghai Center for Research in English Language Education (SCRELE) , New Target College English Readings in Chinese Culture, was listed.
Chinese culture going global has become an irreversible trend, and it will be an important mission for Chinese university students to introduce Chinese culture in English and carry out cross-cultural communication in international exchanges. The English Teaching Guide for Universities formulated by the Ministry of Education especially proposes to cultivate college students' cross-cultural communication skills, and lists the content about Chinese culture in the proposed curriculum. Readings in Chinese Culture, as one of the thematic English courses in the New Target College English Series, carries this mission and reflects the direction and trend of college English teaching reform. In accordance with the objectives of the University English Teaching Guide, and in response to the current knowledge structure of university students and the needs of international communication, this tutorial selects English reading materials with multiple perspectives and dimensions around a number of core themes of Chinese culture, so as to enable students to deepen their understanding of their own cultures while learning English, to enhance their cultural identity, and to further cultivate their cross-cultural communicative competence.
The Shanghai Research Base of English Education and Teaching will take this opportunity to study and implement the instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping on teaching materials construction, implement the spirit of the National Conference on Teaching Materials Construction, adhere to the correct direction, strengthen the coordination and guidance, and build a professional support system for teaching materials construction, so as to create more high-quality teaching materials to cultivate the roots and cast the soul and to inspire the intellect and increase the wisdom.
